Left alone, they will not taint, rust or fail over a period of time. What do start to fail are the screws that hold the door hinges and door handles on the door and the frame. The pressures and strains of everyday openings start to loosen the screws. This is very true on heavier doors that are either left open a lot or bear a lot of traffic. If you find a loose screws, simply tighten them with a screwdriver. If the screws in the door hinges spin in their place and will not tighten into the wood.
